DLP Submits Application At Oakham

DLP has submitted a planning application to Rutland County Council, for permission to build a major extension to the town of Oakham.

The plans for the Oakham North development will provide about 1100 new homes, new shopping facilities, offices, parks and open spaces, children’s play areas and a new local centre on land between the existing town and the bypass. The plans also provide improved transport links, including new cycle, footpath and bus routes.

A wide range of housing will be built with an emphasis on providing family homes. Around 300 of the new homes are likely to be affordable dwellings, both  for rent and for equity share.

As key part of the development is the provision of 26 ha of new playing fields for Oakham Rugby Club and Royce rangers a junior football club.  Facilities will also be provided for athletics and scope to accommodate other sports and county pursuits.  These new facilities will replace existing playing fields that lie within the are to be developed, almost doubling the number of pitches available and paving the way for a new pavilion that will allow the clubs to meet their obligations and cater for the increasing demand for sports in the town.  The new playing fields will also provide a permanent home for the Rutland County Show which is one of the most important events on the town’s calendar.  The Agricultural Society who organise the Show has seen the event long since outgrow its old site.  The new site will ensure that a tradition stretching back almost 200 years can be assured of a bright future.

The plans were first published for public consultation in April 2008 and following further consultations earlier this year have been revised to accommodate public opinion which is overwhelmingly supportive.
