DLP Planning Ltd has secured full planning permission for the retention of an existing GP’s surgery on Victoria Road, Bedford. DLP Planning Ltd was instructed by NHS Property Services to submit the application following consideration of the building’s retention.
The current surgery was granted planning permission in May 2005 with a condition that the building would be removed by April 2010 to enable the Local Planning Authority (LPA) to reassess the impact of the development. Following on from discussions with the LPA, it was confirmed that a full, retrospective application would be required to retain the building. Pre-application discussions with Bedford Borough Council raised issues with the design and cladding of the surgery, and as a consequence a detailed Design and Access Statement was drafted to support the application.
The analysis assessed the impact of the pre-fabricated structure on the streetscape. It found that the cladding matched well with the colour palette of the street, and that the style of the architecture was not out-of-place in a street with a variety of architectural styles. Bedford Borough Council accepted the analysis and granted full planning permission, ensuring that the surgery will remain open to treat patients in the local community in the years to come.
