Environmental Consultant – Associate Director

Job Description / Role Within the Company

DLP Planning Ltd Sustainable Development and Delivery team is at the forefront of providing advice on the practical delivery of development and optimising the value of client’s assets, having very close regard to planning policy and other relevant statutory and regulatory requirements.

New legislation and emerging planning policy and guidance now underlines the increasing environmental and societal requirements on development arising from the creation and management of natural habitats and protected species. The forthcoming requirement within the Environment Act to secure minimum Biodiversity Net Gain is a main focus of this approach and will have impacts for every scale of development.

The Practice is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced Environmental Planner to advise on the requirements of biodiversity net gain across the spectrum of our work. The post will be a senior appointment (commencing as an Associate Director) and will be fully supported by the Company’s Board of Directors and senior staff in leading on the promotion and resolution of issues related to environmental conservation and enhancement.

You will work with our existing client base including landowners, promoters, developers, charities and local authorities across a range of sectors including residential, commercial, specialist older persons housing and renewable energy as well as contributing to business development related to meeting the specific environmental enhancement goals of new clients.

As part of this role, membership of the IEMA is desirable.

You will:

  • Be responsible for advising on the requirements for Biodiversity Net Gain, designing and negotiating mitigation strategies and other sustainable investment initiatives for clients on broad range of projects
  • Seek opportunities to advise on the contractual and funding structures for high profile conservation initiatives for a range of clients including Wildlife Trusts, Local Authorities, and institutional investors.
  • Explore opportunities to establish and promote new initiatives that will provide arrangements for the delivery, funding and sale of biodiversity credits and identify large institutions and new or existing land owning clients that will be crucial to the effective delivery of net gain
  • Act for developers in identifying and securing land for Biodiversity Net Gain provision.
  • Draft notes and reports to advise clients on opportunities for environmental enhancement and mechanisms for their delivery.
  • Maintain project administration and keep up to date with relevant environmental policy and legislation.
  • Develop new business opportunities for new and retained clients.

Person Specification

This role would be ideally suited to candidates with a qualification and experience in environmental science/environmental planning/ecology/landscape, underpinned by a strong interest in broader sustainability. You will not, necessarily need to demonstrate a track record in town planning, although some experience would be helpful, but we are looking to complement our expertise in these areas.  A good understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain and its implications is essential and

Your skillset in environmental sustainability and enhancement should be complemented with good commercial awareness, skills in communicating ideas, be client orientated, innovative, dynamic and enterprising.

You will work as part of DLP Planning’s wider team and contribute effectively to strategies for site promotion and schemes being prepared for submission and determination. Strong written and communication skills and an ability to manage wider teams of sub-consultants are also important.

Key Skills, Experience and Competencies


Ability to effectively coordinate relevant environmental survey and ecological assessments

Understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain legislation and practice


Familiar with the requirement of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations

Experience in the development of planning policy and mitigation strategies

Senior Urban Designer (Bedford, Nottingham, Sheffield or London)

DLP Sustainable Development and Delivery Team, provide services in urban design and master planning, from locations in Bedford, Bristol, Rugby, Sheffield, Nottingham and Clerkenwell, London.

Due to an increasing workload we are looking to appoint an experienced Senior Urban Designer / Layout Designer to join our organisation, to work within our specialist master planning team.  The ideal candidate should have 4+ years post qualification experience with good track record and understanding of delivering exemplar masterplanning and urban design schemes.  Working on various types of residential led projects around the UK, the ideal candidate will provide project leadership to assist Design Directors, developing master plans, strategic urban planning concepts and strategies, feasibility studies, design and access statements and design codes.

The company’s strategy is centred on growth, and that includes the Design services part of the business.  The candidate will be expected to play a key role in the growth strategy by working closely with the Design and Planning Directors and other senior staff identifying and addressing new opportunities.

The candidate should be able to produce drawings and presentations in 2D and 3D, while communicating within project teams and clients during all phases of each project.  A good understanding of planning requirements, hand drawing and rendering would be an advantage and good written and verbal communication skills are a requirement.

The Senior Urban Designer essential criteria:

  • Post-graduate qualification in urban design and /or demonstrable experience of work on medium and large scale residential and mixed-use masterplans and housing layouts.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating proven design ability and excellent presentation skills.
  • A passionate placemaking professional with a background in architecture or landscape architecture, confident in layout design for large scale projects, able to test capacities, come up with and illustrate design concepts.
  • Demonstrate experience at producing 1/500 scaled free hand sketch residential layouts and working on large scale residential projects for major housebuilders or an equivalent.
  • Have the ability to produce high quality hand drawings.
  • A high level of visual and verbal skill and the ability to design using freehand and computer aided software.
  • Proficient software skills including AutoCAD 2D and 3D, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat.
  • Strong knowledge of the planning system and UK design standards, national and local design codes.
  • Experience of interaction with clients and consultants during the design phase and at presentations.
  • Ability to work under pressure to budgets and schedules.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate the following associated skills:

  • Proficient use of REVIT and/or SketchUp /other 3D and rendering software.
  • Experience of stakeholder consultation.
  • Experience of generating new clients and projects, as well as commercial awareness.
  • Experience of working within multi-disciplinary teams.
