Environmental Consultant – Associate Director

Job Description / Role Within the Company

DLP Planning Ltd Sustainable Development and Delivery team is at the forefront of providing advice on the practical delivery of development and optimising the value of client’s assets, having very close regard to planning policy and other relevant statutory and regulatory requirements.

New legislation and emerging planning policy and guidance now underlines the increasing environmental and societal requirements on development arising from the creation and management of natural habitats and protected species. The forthcoming requirement within the Environment Act to secure minimum Biodiversity Net Gain is a main focus of this approach and will have impacts for every scale of development.

The Practice is seeking to appoint a suitably qualified and experienced Environmental Planner to advise on the requirements of biodiversity net gain across the spectrum of our work. The post will be a senior appointment (commencing as an Associate Director) and will be fully supported by the Company’s Board of Directors and senior staff in leading on the promotion and resolution of issues related to environmental conservation and enhancement.

You will work with our existing client base including landowners, promoters, developers, charities and local authorities across a range of sectors including residential, commercial, specialist older persons housing and renewable energy as well as contributing to business development related to meeting the specific environmental enhancement goals of new clients.

As part of this role, membership of the IEMA is desirable.

You will:

  • Be responsible for advising on the requirements for Biodiversity Net Gain, designing and negotiating mitigation strategies and other sustainable investment initiatives for clients on broad range of projects
  • Seek opportunities to advise on the contractual and funding structures for high profile conservation initiatives for a range of clients including Wildlife Trusts, Local Authorities, and institutional investors.
  • Explore opportunities to establish and promote new initiatives that will provide arrangements for the delivery, funding and sale of biodiversity credits and identify large institutions and new or existing land owning clients that will be crucial to the effective delivery of net gain
  • Act for developers in identifying and securing land for Biodiversity Net Gain provision.
  • Draft notes and reports to advise clients on opportunities for environmental enhancement and mechanisms for their delivery.
  • Maintain project administration and keep up to date with relevant environmental policy and legislation.
  • Develop new business opportunities for new and retained clients.

Person Specification

This role would be ideally suited to candidates with a qualification and experience in environmental science/environmental planning/ecology/landscape, underpinned by a strong interest in broader sustainability. You will not, necessarily need to demonstrate a track record in town planning, although some experience would be helpful, but we are looking to complement our expertise in these areas.  A good understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain and its implications is essential and

Your skillset in environmental sustainability and enhancement should be complemented with good commercial awareness, skills in communicating ideas, be client orientated, innovative, dynamic and enterprising.

You will work as part of DLP Planning’s wider team and contribute effectively to strategies for site promotion and schemes being prepared for submission and determination. Strong written and communication skills and an ability to manage wider teams of sub-consultants are also important.

Key Skills, Experience and Competencies

Essential:

Ability to effectively coordinate relevant environmental survey and ecological assessments

Understanding of Biodiversity Net Gain legislation and practice

Desirable:

Familiar with the requirement of the Environmental Impact Assessment Regulations

Senior Urban Designer (Bedford, Nottingham, Sheffield or London)

DLP Sustainable Development and Delivery Team, provide services in urban design and master planning, from locations in Bedford, Bristol, Rugby, Sheffield, Nottingham and Clerkenwell, London.

Due to an increasing workload we are looking to appoint an experienced Senior Urban Designer / Layout Designer to join our organisation, to work within our specialist master planning team.  The ideal candidate should have 4+ years post qualification experience with good track record and understanding of delivering exemplar masterplanning and urban design schemes.  Working on various types of residential led projects around the UK, the ideal candidate will provide project leadership to assist Design Directors, developing master plans, strategic urban planning concepts and strategies, feasibility studies, design and access statements and design codes.

The company’s strategy is centred on growth, and that includes the Design services part of the business.  The candidate will be expected to play a key role in the growth strategy by working closely with the Design and Planning Directors and other senior staff identifying and addressing new opportunities.

The candidate should be able to produce drawings and presentations in 2D and 3D, while communicating within project teams and clients during all phases of each project.  A good understanding of planning requirements, hand drawing and rendering would be an advantage and good written and verbal communication skills are a requirement.

The Senior Urban Designer essential criteria:

  • Post-graduate qualification in urban design and /or demonstrable experience of work on medium and large scale residential and mixed-use masterplans and housing layouts.
  • A strong portfolio demonstrating proven design ability and excellent presentation skills.
  • A passionate placemaking professional with a background in architecture or landscape architecture, confident in layout design for large scale projects, able to test capacities, come up with and illustrate design concepts.
  • Demonstrate experience at producing 1/500 scaled free hand sketch residential layouts and working on large scale residential projects for major housebuilders or an equivalent.
  • Have the ability to produce high quality hand drawings.
  • A high level of visual and verbal skill and the ability to design using freehand and computer aided software.
  • Proficient software skills including AutoCAD 2D and 3D, Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop and Acrobat.
  • Strong knowledge of the planning system and UK design standards, national and local design codes.
  • Experience of interaction with clients and consultants during the design phase and at presentations.
  • Ability to work under pressure to budgets and schedules.

The ideal candidate should demonstrate the following associated skills:

  • Proficient use of REVIT and/or SketchUp /other 3D and rendering software.
  • Experience of stakeholder consultation.
  • Experience of generating new clients and projects, as well as commercial awareness.

Urban Designer

Overview

Due to an increasing master-planning workload an exciting opportunity has arisen for an ambitious Urban Designer / Masterplanner or Layout Designer to join our team.  The ideal candidate should have between one and three years post qualification experience with a track record and understanding of delivering high quality master planning and urban design schemes for a range of developments.  The ideal candidate will provide technical support to our Directors/Associate Directors and work within the planning teams to assist developing master plans, strategic urban planning concepts and strategies, feasibility studies, design and access statements and design codes.
Roles and Responsibilities

The candidate should be able to work within a team environment and produce drawings and presentations in 2D and 3D, while communicating within project teams and clients during all phases of each project.  An understanding of planning requirements, hand drawing and rendering would be an advantage and good written and verbal communication skills are a requirement.

General Job Requirements:

Associate Directors are required to lead on projects and manage their own workload as well as providing support to Directors and the Board. They are supported by junior members of the professional planning team and have a high level of client contact and business development responsibility. Timely and thorough attention to both projects and clients is a key responsibility.

The role requires a candidate with a strong development management background to support the ongoing workload of applications, appeals and site representations.

Key roles:

  1. Responsible for managing projects/clients. Associate Directors report to the Office Directors whilst winning new instructions for which they have a large measure of responsibility;
  2. Manage the workload of junior professional staff members, assisting them on individual projects; and
  3. Undertake marketing and business development activities (existing network of contacts would be beneficial).

Person profile

The successful candidate will be able to manage competing demands on their time and prioritise tasks for themselves and others. Good interpersonal skills, a “can do” attitude and the ability to work in a team is essential. A key aspect of the role is to provide excellent planning advice/strategy whist conveying/managing risks.  The candidate will be self-motivated and have a focus on business development in order to expand their own network of clients.

  • IT literate with good skills in word processing, spreadsheets, and database management.

A full driving licence and Membership of the RTPI is essential.

Senior / Associate Planner SPRU Team

DLP Planning Ltd are seeking to recruit a Senior Planner / Associate Planner to the Company’s Strategic Planning Research Unit (SPRU), with experience gained from either a public or private sector background, and with experience of undertaking independent research and the presentation of this at inquiry and local plan examinations. This work will focus predominantly, but not solely, on housing and employment issues.

The role is wide ranging as the team is based around an ethos of research and problem solving for clients. The SPRU team frequently provides inputs across the company’s most complex and/or larger projects, including major urban extensions, large scale commercial developments and new settlements and acting for/providing advice to public sector clients on the same.

This can include making the strategic case for development plan allocations or significant application proposals and identifying the needs of specific groups such as older persons’ housing.

As well as working for private sector clients, the SPRU team also supports local planning authorities and LEPs in preparing detailed evidence base studies on matters relating to housing, employment and Green Belt, to support strategic and local plan preparation.

The role would be ideal for those with a background in evidence base preparation and site promotion. The ability to take a wider view of the requirements for delivery of successful schemes (e.g., infrastructure provision, deliverability and sustainability appraisal) and successful local plan implementation is essential, and a detailed knowledge of these specific areas of policy and guidance would be beneficial. You will, for example, support the team in particular in producing economic strategies, employment land reviews as well as housing and employment land availability assessments, age/population assessments and health impact assessments.

The flexibility of virtual working will allow the candidate to be nominally based at one of DLP’s Offices (there are 8) but work nationally.

The candidate will assist the growing SPRU team providing advice and guidance to all DLP offices and clients across the country. As a Senior / Associate Planner one of the key roles of the post will be the promotion of the services offered by SPRU to existing and new clients.

Job purpose:

You will assist in providing a specialist planning and research service to both new and existing clients and help expand the business. This is an important role within an established and expanding part of the nationwide planning team. This will require the post-holder to be able to work within a team and take the lead on occasions as part of managing a wide and complex workload, provide assistance and support to other members of the team and the wider Planning Team and to assist in managing and developing a client base.

The role will require regular appearance and presentation of evidence at local plan examinations and public inquiries, reflecting your main areas of expertise. You will work with the various other Group offices and services as required to help develop and expand the Group as a whole in the delivery of existing projects and identification of new opportunities.

Person profile:

The successful candidate will be client focussed with an ability to define and deliver planning and development projects to time and to cost. The candidate will be highly numerate and be able to write and present reports/evidence in a clear, precise and logical manner. The candidate will be IT literate with good skills in word processing, spreadsheets, database management, desk-based research (include online) as well as being able to work flexibly on a wide range of projects.

The successful candidate should be confident in representing the SPRU team and presenting their findings to clients. You will act regularly on behalf of developers, promoters, local planning authorities as well as other organisations (including statutory bodies such as the NHS) and Town and Parish Councils. The candidate will be given the opportunity to develop presentational skills in settings such as examinations and appeals.

The ability to work independently as well as taking clear instructions will be an important attribute for this role. A full driving license is essential.

The Sustainable Development and Delivery (SDD) Team provide a range of transport planning, traffic engineering and infrastructure design services to support development projects all across the UK.

We are seeking a Senior Transport Planner/Engineer with experience in development planning. With a background either in private practice or in local Government, you will have a good understanding of the development planning process in the UK.  You will have experience in completing Transport Assessments, Transport Statements, Site Access Appraisals and Travel Plans, and experience in highway / junction design.  You will also have strong report writing and communication skills.  A confident user of ARCADY / PICADY / LinSig, TRICS, Tempro and AutoCAD is desirable.
